The IAME starter coals (reference broken view 508A) are small conductive carbon parts located inside the Electrical starter karting engines like the IAME X30, KA100or Rotax. Their function is essential to the proper start of the engine.

Role and functioning

The coals provide electrical contact between the stator (fixed) and the rotor (mobile) of the starter engine.
When operating the starter:

  • the current passes through the coals to the rotor collector,
  • this current creates an electromagnetic field that rotates the rotor,
  • the movement is transmitted to the launcher, which then drives the crankshaft of the kart engine.

It is thanks to them that the engine can run fast enough to turn on.

Usure and maintenance

Coals are wear and tear parts: with permanent friction on the collector, they gradually simmer.
Signs of tired coals:

  • the starter turns slower,
  • it makes an irregular noise,
  • or sometimes, it no longer reacts at all.

Regular replacement (every 10 to 20 hours of driving, depending on the usage) avoids damage to the full starter.

Composition and assembly

One IAME starter coal kit generally includes:

  • two coals,
  • two pressure springs (to maintain constant contact),
  • sometimes the coal holders or the coal holder according to the reference.

These parts are mounted directly in the electric starter type X30/KA100/Rotax, often identified by reference 508A on official IAME bursts.
