As their name indicates, ignition candles intended for competition are special candles designed for mechanical sport. Because of the specificity of their characteristics, they cannot be used for road driving.

The use of competition candles makes sense when it comes to continuously high engine speeds (>10000 t/m) associated with very strong developed power (>100kW/l), as is the case with competition engines. The longevity of the candles is not, in this case, a predominant criterion, but rather the ability to withstand for a given duration and without fail, the vibrations, the thermal loads and the speed of the gases which appear at these extreme speeds (in Formula 1, the current speeds are of the order of 17 to 18000 t/min). The NGK competition candles, very cold (thermal range from 9 to 12), present a special insulation drawing to avoid the blasting of the spark by gas turbulences; they support the most extreme conditions and are truly very different from normal candles.

The competition candles have very special electrode designs (oblique mass electrodes, ring electrodes) as shown in the photograph. This sophisticated design avoids damage caused by electrodes destroyed by vibration.

Specialties have a cost. The spark plugs specially developed and made for competition are of course more expensive than standard candles. This is explained by the fact that the demand is not extensible because these candles are used only by professional stables, semi-professional teams, engine preparers and in the world of motor sport. But in this area, our products can show and demonstrate their particular qualities in sports competition and guarantee better performance. To ensure that each specific application type finds the bougie nGK has published a special catalogue showing all the characteristics of the models available and their thermal ranges.

A final comment on the operating time of a bougie of competition: it is not possible to predict accurately the operational longevity of a bougie the individual conditions of use are too different from each other. However, user experience indicates that a service life of between 1 and 5 competitions can be expected, depending on the sport class of the vehicle.
