The bellows (or protective cap) is located at the back of the piston, where the thrust rod enters the body of the pump. Its role is often underestimated:
Physical barrier: It prevents track dust, gum residues and moisture to enter the cylinder.
Piston protection: Once the dust enters, it mixes with grease and creates an abrasive paste that shines the surface of the piston and the body of the pump.
Sustainability: A bellows in good condition multiplies two the life of your internal cups.
In the 22SRR pump, this part ensures Dynamic tightness. Unlike a static O-ring (which does not move), it is subjected to a constant back and forth movement at each pressure on the pedal.
Function: It prevents the brake fluid from reflving backwards the piston and holds the hydraulic pressure needed to operate your stirrups.
Consequence of a failure: A pedal that becomes "soft", which sinks to the floor, or a leak of liquid that appears at the protective bellows (cap).

The most important point: The material. The seals used in hydraulic braking must imperatively be in EPDM (ethylene-propylene).
The danger: If you are using a "standard" O-ring (often in NBR / black nitrile bought in DIY store), it will swell, disintegrate and pollute your circuit in less than a few hours in contact with the Brake fluid DOT 4 /5.1.
